Description:   Claudine tries to provide for her six children in Harlem while on welfare. She has a romance with Roop, a cheerful garbageman she meets while working on the side as a maid. Diahann Carroll was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress in 1974. Diana Sands was chosen for the female lead role, but she died of cancer shortly before shooting of the film began.Diahann Carroll affectionately called "The Bronze Barbie Doll" had to fight for the lead role due to the fact that many thought she was too"glamourous" to play Claudine.
